The discovery of the account had been made by accident, while cleaning out the junk drawer. Daniel ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he’d developed over the last year. He reread the statement, the figures blurring slightly.

The money, a large sum, represented years of meticulous saving, years he'd believed they were struggling. His stomach clenched with a sudden, sharp pain. He went to the window, the image of his wife's face—her loving eyes, her gentle smile—now seemed distorted.
